Costume Design

Australian costume designer Jennifer Irwin’s career spans 36 years designing for drama, opera, dance and ballet, as well as the largest spectacular events, ever staged in Australia.

Jennifer was nominated for the 2016 ACCTA Best Costume Design Award for her work on Spear (feature film directed by Stephen Page). Jennifer designed the costumes for Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage, which is still playing to packed audiences worldwide after 16 years.

Jennifer has been commissioned to produce costumes for world-renowned ballet companies such as: The Sydney Dance Company, 26 years repertoire for Bangarra Dance Theatre, multiple works for The Australian Ballet, Melbourne Theatre Company, Belvoir, Royal New Zealand, Australian Dance Theatre, West Australian Ballet, Queensland Ballet and Opera Australia.

Costume Design credits include: “Awakening” segment of the Olympic Games and co-designed all costumes for the Closing Ceremony (Sydney, 2000); official ceremony commemorating Federation of Australia (2001). Australian box office successes include: Keating – The Musical; Stuff Happens (Belvoir); Don Parties On (Melbourne Theatre Company); Romeo and Juliet (Opera Australia) and Ainadamar (Adelaide Festival).

Jennifer’s work has been staged live on stage in over 70 countries and over 500 cities. Venues include: The Royal Opera House, London; Lincoln Center, NYC; City Center, NYC; Brooklyn Academy of Music and Sydney Opera House.

Jennifer has been recognized for her contribution to Australian design with multiple Helpmann, Green Room and Australian Dance awards and nominations.
